Virginia federal prosecutors are accusing a doctor of performing unnecessary surgical procedures on several patients without their knowledge.
69-year-old Javaid Perwaiz is being held without bond until his next court appearance. He was arrested on Friday and charged with one count each of health care fraud and making false statements in connection to health care issues.
A hospital employee reported the doctor's acts to police last year and he has been under-investigation since. The FBI affidavit listed four unidentified patients who were subjected to procedures such as hysterectomies and tubal ligation.
Lawrence Woodward, Perwaiz's attorney said that his client is not representing any risk to the public.
