A Pennsylvania man has been convicted of fatally stabbing his girlfriend amid an impending breakup.
25-year-old James Gilbert was found guilty on Wednesday of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime after the jury deliberated for nearly 90 minutes. He is now facing a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for the murder count.
Gilbert killed 20-year-old Marinda Matasowski at her mother's home in Millcreek. He stabbed her 27 times with a kitchen knife before stabbing himself in the chest, authorities said.
Gilbert's defense team suggested that his client was acting under the influence of marijuana he had smoked that day.
