The Illinois Capitol chose a satanic decoration this year to celebrate the holidays season.

for this season the capitol allowed the Satanic Temple of Chicago to display their latest work, an arm holding an apple, with a snake coiled around it. Called "Snaketivity," the work also has a sign that reads "Knowledge Is The Greatest Gift."

along with a menorah for Hanukkah.

a spokesman for the Secretary of State's office Dave Druker said that the status has been on display since Monday and would remain there until the end of this month.

"We feel it's a First Amendment issue, we have other displays there -- a Hanukkah menorah and Nativity scene," Drucker said. "If you have displays of one type you need to be consistent and allow everyone to do so, aside from hate speeches and other unacceptable things."

Lux Armiger, chairman for the group, said that they are not trying to convert people and that its members are atheists who are often interested in community activism.

The group says it embraces the "struggle for justice" and believes people should "strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures."

citizens had mixed feelings toward the move, some support it as it represents freedom of speech and religion; on the other hand, some people find it inappropriate and offensive.
