Homeowner hailed as a hero after killing escaped inmate

A South Carolina homeowner is being considered a hero after she fatally shot an escaped inmate who kicked in her door early Tuesday.

The inmate, identified as 30-year-old Bruce Webb McLaughlin Jr, had escaped the Pickens County Prison that night around 2:40 a.m. alongside Timothy Cleveland Dill who was arrested by deputies on a road near the prison. The woman, who had undergone firearms training and had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, said that McLaughin had kicked in her home's door, armed himself with a foot-long metal sharpening tool he took from the kitchen and approached the door, just feet away from where she was sleeping. She shot him once in the head.

Police said that the incident is shining example of why homeowners, especially women should receive concealed guns permits.
