An Iowa father was sentenced to life behind bars after leaving his baby son alone in a dark, infected bedroom for nine days before he died.

Zachary Koehn, 29, was convicted of first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death, and sentenced Tuesday in Chicasaw County District Court.

The suspect left his 3-year-old son, Sterling, to die alone in a baby swing in a bedroom with closed windows and door, in August 2017. Prosecutors said the boy had been infected by E.Coli bacteria that ate through his skin and entered his bloodstream. The hot room attracted flies and maggots that crawled on the baby, while he was still alive. Meanwhile the parents lived in the same apartment unit, caring for their 2-year-old daughter.

The infant died from dehydration, malnutrition and infection.
