An especially deadly October in New York City, and the murder rate now up for the year.

5years ago

New York City news, New York news.

Police data show that the total number of homicides in New York City since the beginning of the year is 257, seven more than last year.

Two recent mass murders - a massacre of homeless men in Manhattan and a bloodbath in an illegal gambling den in Brooklyn - have contributed to the increase in homicides.

A homeless man was accused of beating four homeless people with a metal bar in Chinatown Chinatown on 5 October. A fifth man was seriously injured during the horrific attacks.

And Saturday, at least 15 shots were fired at an illegal gambling den in Crown Heights. Four men were killed and three others were shot.

Earlier this year, in July, NYPD statistics suggested the city was on its way to its lowest murder rate since the 1950s.

After Saturday's shooting, Mayor Blasio promised to end the "scourge of gun violence" in the city.
