According to the authorities, a federal prison guard in Florida has been charged with smuggling cellphones, cigarettes and other contraband into the facility where he worked.

Court records show that 47-year-old Victor DeJesus Jr. appeared for the first time on Friday in Miami federal court. He faces several charges, including a plot to defraud the United States and corruption of a public servant.

Investigators said DeJesus was working as a correctional officer at the Miami Prison before being arrested this week. According to officials, DeJesus has received thousands of dollars since last December, when he began smuggling into the low security prison.

Two detainees were also charged.
