An inmate killed by homeowner, the other captured after escaping from a South Carolina prison

One inmate was shot and killed by a homeowner and another taken into custody soon after they escaped early Tuesday from a jail in South Carolina.

According to The Pickens County Sheriff's Office the two inmates escaped at around 2:40 a.m. from the prison after they attacked two detention center officers and held them captive.

"One of the inmates has been captured and is in custody here in Pickens County and the second inmate has been shot by a homeowner and is deceased," said the sheriff's office.

Additional details about the escape and the identities of the inmates are expected to be released in the sheriff's office news conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The Pickens County Prison is located about 25 miles west of Greenville.
