A New York Police officer has been shot in the hand on Staten Island during a shooting on Tuesday morning, according to a high-ranking police source.
The female officer was hit in the left hand at 20 Prince Street and was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center where she is in stable condition. The shooting unfolded Tuesday about 8:45 a.m. in the Stapelton section of Staten Island.
"There was a prior crime. They were doing a canvass with the victim and they spotted the perp. They had a description," said a police officer. "
Officers at the scene tried to revive the suspect by performing CPR but he died shortly after being taken to Staten Island University North Hospital.
The identities of the officer and the suspect were not immediately released.
