A Border Patrol officer was shot and wounded on Friday night when he was conducting traffic control near the Texas-Mexico border and another officer shot and killed the gunman, authorities said on Saturday. .

According to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), two officers at Brackettville Station and a representative of the Kinney County Sheriff intercepted a vehicle on Route 674 of the ranch.

A passenger in the vehicle fired at the officers, injuring one of them. The second officer fired back and hit the shooter, who was later declared dead on the scene. The driver of the vehicle was stopped.

CBP later identified the deceased passenger as a 25-year-old man and a US citizen. The driver was identified as a 32 year old woman, also a US citizen.

The FBI and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, as well as the CBP Office of Professional Liability.
