The residents of an apartment complex in the Albaster Gardens Community awoke Saturday morning to gunshots after a man was shot and killed by deputies.
The incident happened around 4a.m. when the Escambia County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a murder in one of the complex's apartments.
Once there, a suspect holding a meat cleaver and another cutting instrument opened the door and refused the orders to drop his weapons.
The suspect then attacked deputies with the meat cleaver forcing them to open fire at him.
According to neighbors, the suspect was a long-time resident and a military veteran.
No one else was found incide the apartment and no deputies were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
