An Iranian woman has reportedly died after setting herself on fire when she learned she is facing jail for supporting her favorite team.
30-year-old Sahar Khodayari burned herself to death last week when she was denied access to the stadium and spent three nights behind bars for pretending to be a man and trying to support the Esteghlal Tehran Football Club.
The Iranian law bans women from entering soccer stadiums but allows them to attend other kinds of sports such as volleyball.
"She supported us despite the politics made it illegal for her, but what we do can do to support her," the club said in a statement. "Absolutely nothing. We are cowards."
The Iranian minister of information and communications technology described the death as a "bitter incident."
