A migrant smuggling attempt ended with three fatalities and eight seriously injured people when Border Patrol agents intercepted a "drive-through" car forcing its way illegally into the country.

The incident occured Thursday afternoon in the remote, rugged area of California, when the agents tried to stop a pickup fleeing, entering and exiting Interstate 8 twice and weaving through traffic at a speed of 100mph.

The agents deployed a tire deflation device causing the pickup to lose control within a minute, crashing and rolling over. There were nine people in the truck alongside the driver and a female passenger in the cab.

One woman and two men died in the crash about 60 miles east of San Diego.

The driver, a U.S citizen is in custody, he could face vehicular manslaughter charges.
