Former Dallas police officer indicted on the murder of unarmed neighbor

The white former Dallas police officer who shot dead her black unarmed neighbor on Sept. 6 has been indicted on a murder charge.

Amber Guyger said that she mistook Botham Jean's apartment for hers after returning from her 15-hour shift in-uniform and parking on the fourth floor of the complex's garage rather than the third, where her unit was located. She claimed she opened Jean's apartment thinking it was hers, and shot the figure standing in darkness twice after ignoring her commands.

The victim, 26, a native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia attended college in Arkansas and had been working for accounting and consulting firm PwC.

The shooting revived in the Dallas community the conversation on the intersection of race and law enforcement.
