A 22-year-old Georgia mother is facing criminal charges after she allegedly left her newborn girl on a doorstep then called the police to check on her condition.
Doretha Burkes will be charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and felony counts of cruelty to children and providing false information to police after she called 911 to report that she is homeless and can't afford for her little daughter. Authorities said that the investigation that she was hiding her pregnancy and didn't disclose her secret to anyone including her mother with whom she lived: "She gave birth to the child in secret, then took the newborn and placed her on a doorstep," according to police.
The child was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. She is listed in good condition.
