Thousands of Washington DC residents lost electricity on Saturday after a malfunction at a local substation.

The breakdown began around 14:30. AND reached approximately 40,000 Pepco customers in the district at its peak.

Police reportedly received a wave of calls from people trapped in elevators as the city sweated 90 degrees.

The outage affected the Shaw neighborhoods of Woodley Park, Van Ness, Adams Morgan, DuPont, Logan Circle, U Street and Mount Pleasant.

Pepco asked customers to call the company's phone number at 1-877-737-2662. A website referred by the utility indicated that electricity would not be restored for all affected residents until Sunday morning.
