A 30-year-old Michigan mother was shot to death by her husband who mistook her for an intruder who was about to break into his family home, police said.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office told reporters that the victim's 4-year-old kid called police claiming that his mom who suffered a bullet wound in the chest was unresponsive.

The father then took the line from the toddler and told police that he thought that his wife was sleeping. He then heard noises in the home so he grabbed his firearm that he kept at his bedside and opened fire, according to Officer Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.

Following the tragedy, a neighbor claimed: "I was so shocked. There were police cars all down the street, there's tape, detectives."
