A 65-year-old Simi Valley man has received a 12-year sentence in the 2016 killing of stepson over chores.
Howard Novak was convicted last month of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the murder of 28-year-old Kelly Hughes, according to prosecutors.
The slaying occurred when the suspect had entered in a fight with his stepson over chores he didn't do earlier on Aug. 4, 2016. He used a knife to fatally stab the victim several times in the abdomen and chest at the family's home on the 2200 block of Hietter Avenue.
Novak has stayed at the house until his arrest later that night. According to prosecutors, the 12-year sentence he received is the maximum sentence allowed in his case.
