US medtech firm linked to faulty implants causing deaths

Medtronic, the giant US medtech company could be linked to 9,300 deaths and 292,000 injuries in the US alone according to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists(ICIJ) report published Sunday.

One in five of the company's medical implants have tested faulty as "patients around the world have become unwitting test subjects for new medical technology," claims the ICIJ.

The $400bn industry, one of the world's largest producers of insulin injectors and Parkinson's disease treatments, has been the target of most of the complaints since it is the largest distributor of such products.

Medtronic's spokesman Rob Clark responded: "Allegations are not facts and shouldn't be interpreted to suggest that Medtronic violated our legal, ethical or regulatory obligations."
