According to Egyptian officials, a roadside bomb hit a tourist bus near the Giza pyramids on Sunday, killing at least 17 people among the tourists.

The bus was traveling on a road near the Egyptian Grand Museum under construction, adjacent to the Giza pyramids.

The bus was carrying at least 25 people, mostly from South Africa, officials said.

The explosion damaged the windshield of another car.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to inform the media.

The attack comes as Egypt's vital tourism industry is showing signs of recovery after years of slump due to political turmoil and violence following the 2011 uprising that overthrew former leader Hosni Mubarak.

This is the second time in less than six months that foreign tourists are approaching the famous pyramids
