Traffic on a highway near New York was closed on Saturday after a major fire broke out overnight in an Alden Leads factory in Kearny.

State transportation officials confirmed "firefighter activity" early Saturday morning, adding that traffic in both directions near the Pulaski Skyway junction would remain closed.

Local residents were warned of the "dangerous fumes" resulting from the fire and were warned to "keep windows and doors closed and stay indoors".

Warnings have since been raised in the surrounding areas.

Officials from the city of Bayonne also tweeted Saturday that the air quality was "good" and posed no threat.

Residents of Staten Island and Brooklyn were initially warned that fumes and smoke from the fire could reach them.
