Migrants entitled to asylum in port of entry rules a federal judge

5years ago

The Trump government has been blocked by a federal judge from refusing asylum to immigrants who cross the US-Mexico border.

District judge Jon Tigar issued a temporary restraining order at a San Fransciso court after hearing the requests of two US civil rights groups: the American Civil Liberties(ACLU) and the Center for Constitutional Rights(CCR).

The latter's lawyer , Baher Azmy, claims that "individuals are entiteled to asylum if they cross between ports of entry, it couldn't be clearer."

The government has previously said that migrants seeking asylum at the Southern border must present themselves at the official border crossing, where many of them have already lenghty waiting times, forcing them to shelter in outdoor camps in Mexico for weeks.
