Escaped prisoner surrenders after spending more than a decade in Canary Island

Salzburg news, Austria news.

A 64-year-old escaped prisoner had turned himself in to Austrian authorities after spending a decade and a half in the Spanish Tenerife vacation spot.

"Tenerife is not as nice as it used to be," he told officers, adding that he was tired of living in the Canary Archipelago's main island, where it is too sunny.

The man was reportedly carrying his suitcases when he showed up in the police station. He was immediately booked into prison.

Jail records confirmed that the man had escaped from an eastern Austria prison over than a decade ago. His identity and details of his case were not publicly revealed. It is also unclear if his prison term will allow him to see a beach once again.
