Nearly six years after winning the French Open Juniors title, 22-year-old Garin Christian won Sunday's US clay court championship for his first ATP World Tour title. He finally managed to break into the tour, starting Norway's Casper Ruud's attempt to become the first Norwegian winner.
Garin took the break for a 4-2 lead in the third set when, shooting in a thunderous blow, he persuaded Ruud to create a flip-flop that he easily put aside. Garin then easily served in cool, windy, but sunny conditions.
"I'm disappointed because it was a very tight game and a break in the last set was his way," said Ruud. "I had a few chances at 2. All, I tried to stay aggressive and play my game.
Garin will appear for the first time in the top 50 of the world rankings.
