Tampa news, Florida news.

The home of a blind veteran of the Second World War was painted over the weekend by Florida firefighters who decided to give back to the community in a special way.

William Velez, 89, and his wife were grateful after dozens of Hillsborough County Fire Department members and their families painted their homes on Saturday as part of an event coordinated by Paint Your Heart Out Tampa , a volunteer initiative.

In addition to a new coat of paint, firefighters have installed smoke detectors in the Velez home.

The Paint Your Heart Out website in Tampa says its mission "is to enrich lives and renew our community through annual voluntary efforts to paint and beautify the homes of our senior, veteran or disabled ... one brush at a time. "

The group has 75,000 volunteers who painted 3,000 houses, according to the site.
