Denver news, Colorado news.

A southwestern Colorado police officer was seriously injured in the face as he tried to deny a woman from taking her own life, police said.

Local news outlets reported that the shooting took place on U.S. Route 550 on Tuesday morning, during which, San Juan County Undersheriff Steve Lowrance was shot once in the face.

According to authorities, officers were responding to an emergency call reporting a high-speed chase in La Plata County. They pulled over a car that was driven by Amanda Maes, 30-year-old, who had a gun in her own. Lowrance was shot once in the face as he attempted to "prevent the driver from her actions."

He was hospitalized and released later in the day.

The woman had fatally opened fire at herself following the incident.
