Drunk driver sentenced to 20 years for vehicular homicide

New Orleans news outlets report that Olivia Matte of Covington was sentenced to 20 years after she caused a fatal drunk driving crash on the Causeway Bridge in March, 2017.

Matte, 28, has in September pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury and careless driving. Officials said that she was driving drunk, with her blood-alcohol content three times higher than the legal limit, when the crash killed the 37-year-old victim James Blackmond, and sent his brother-in-law to hospital. Matte was driving with a suspended license after two earlier drunk driving arrests in less than a year.

Matte's family said she is remorseful, she herself asked for mercy claiming that she wanted it to have been her gone, not the victim.
