The statue of a Confederate soldier, who had been in the center of Munn Park in Lakeland for 109 years. City officials began dismantling the monument on Friday.

The city commissioners voted in December 2017 to start the process of moving the statue. The decision was made after receiving complaints from residents. In November, commissioners approved funding of $ 150,000 for moving the statue.

The ledger reports that the statue is being moved to a different park where the city is paying tribute to soldiers and first responders.

City Park and Recreation Director Bob Donahay said the dismantling and relocation of the monument will take several days.
