Washington news, Washington news.

The Treasury Department announced Friday that it was further expanding the tax relief it provided to taxpayers whose income tax was too low on their paycheques in the first year.

Then taxpayers would be able to avoid penalties, provided they pay at least 80% of what they owe the government.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said his department was making the decision "to help those who try in good faith to meet their withholding tax obligations."

A number of lawmakers had urged Mnuchin to take the initiative during the congressional appearances last week.

In January, the IRS lowered this threshold from 90% to 85% in order to solve the problems raised by the passage to the law on tax cuts approved by the Congress in December 2017.
