Giant sunfish washes ashore along Coorang National Park beach

Adelaide news, Australia news.

A massive sunfish was discovered along a South Australia beach after washing ashore over the weekend.

The rare discovery was made by two fishermen at the Coorong National Park. According to South Australia Museum this kind of fish is rare and can weight more than a car when it is fully grown.

"I've actually had a good look at it, we get three species here and this is actually the rarest one in South Australian waters," said Ralph Foster, the Museum's fish collection manager.

The oceanic sunfish, which is not very common to find in Australian waters, is the kind known as "Mola Mola" and isn't frequently fished because of their huge weight that cause damages to ships and yachts.
