Long Island news, New York news.

A suspect who had been accused of gouging his grandmother's eyes had taken his own life in his cell on Friday.

Michael Grief, 30, committed suicide while being held at the Suffolk County jail. A guard found Grief hanging in his cell around 4 a.m. Medical staff rushed him to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m.

Two days before his suicide, Grief pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault after he harmed his 78-year-old grandmother's eyes and severely ruptured their globes. Police reportedly told him that his grand mother won't see again to which he nonchalantly reacted.

Grief had been dealing with mental health issues but has never been arrested by the past.
