Hit-and-run suspect sentenced to 6 years probation

A San Angelo suspect has entered a guilty plea in connection with the hit-and-run accident that left a 49-year-old bicyclist suffering several bones breaks.

District Court Judge Jay Weatherby sentenced 52-year-old Matias Escalante to six years of community supervision, court documents said.

The incident happened two years ago in the 5400 block of Link Road around 5 p.m. when the victim later identified as Pedro Lozano Jr, 49, was going for a ride at his bicycle.

The car of the suspect suddenly stroke him from behind throwing him to the ground before fleeing away, according to witnesses.

The victim was transported to the hospital in a critical state. He suffered multiple injuries such as broken toe and broken ribs.

Escalante was apprehended five days later.
