Albany news, New York news.

A suspect accused of shooting an Albania police officer in the leg took his own life and was not killed by responding officers as it was initially believed, authorities said.

An autopsy revealed that 28-year-old Amiel Layeni “died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head”, Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins said.

Layeni fired multiple shots at Officer Jonathan Damphier who had been chasing him for speeding.

Police initially said on Wednesday that Damphier “returned fire and the suspect was shot at some point during that confrontation.”

Hawkins added that Layeni had two illegally possessed 9-millimeter handguns on him at the time of the shooting and a third 9-millimeter ghost gun at his Albany home.
