Portland news, Oregon news.

A Compass Airlines plane from Seattle to Los Angeles was forced to land in Portland because of 21-year-old Washington man who took methamphetamines.

Douglas B. Smyser reportedly told the authorities that he became paranoid and suspicious on board the flight on Wednesday after ingesting methamphetamine before take-off, the Oregonian reported, citing the complaint.

The young man's disturbing behavior began before take-off when a backpack he threw into the aisle began to vibrate because of an electric razor he contained. He also paced the driveway, refused to sit down and claimed that someone at the back of the plane had a rifle, the report said.

Smyser also tried to approach the front of the plane but was detained by a passenger, according to a report. The crew feared to rush into the cockpit, so the captain locked the doors and diverted the plane to Portland International Airport.

The FBI and local police arrested Smyser and charged him with threatening and disorderly conduct, as well as a federal charge of interference with a flight crew.
