Alabama police arrested Thursday a man in connection with the deadly shooting of a Birmingham police officer in January.
31-year-old Jeremy Elwin Owens was formally charged with the killing of Birmingham police Sgt. Wytasha Carter. The victim and his colleague Lucas Allums were investigating multiples late-night car break-ins when the shooting began.
The suspect who was using a wheelchair was injured in the incident and was moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center. It remains unclear if he has a lawyer on his behalf.
According to authorities, Owners was charged with several counts including capital murder, attempted murder and drug offenses.
In 2012, Owners enters a guilty plea to robbery and had served three years sentence in jail.
