An Arkansas mother was shot in the face with an arrow when she was protecting her children, according to authorities.

Janet Partain was attacked by Joseph Avellino, 34, who was trying to steal her property. The suspect allegedly fired the crossbow arrow at her son and nephew who were witnessing the confrontation. She reportedly intervened to protect the children and was hit in the face, with the arrow piercing the left side of her face and crossing to the back of her head.

"It was an odd sight to see someone with an arrow in their face and they're still conscious and talking to me," Capt. Jeff Nichols said.

Avellino was taken into custody and faces charges of first-degree battery and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.
