Chicago news, Illinois news.

Jason Van Dyke, a white policeman from Chicago police shot dead black teenager Laquan McDonald. According to the police officer's wife, he was assaulted by inmates in his prison cell in Connecticut.

The police officer was transferred earlier this month to a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. He was placed in the prison population a few hours after his arrival and was assaulted, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The details of the incident were not immediately clear. A spokesman for the federal correctional facility in Danbury was not available for comment.

In October, a jury in Cook County, Illinois, found Jason Van Dyke guilty of second degree murder and 16 counts of serious injury shots with a firearm for the murder of McDonald's in 2014. Van Dyke was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.

Prosecutors on Monday urged the Illinois Supreme Court to review the sentence. They said they believed Judge Vincent Gaughan had misapplied the law when Van Dyke was convicted.

In the absence of a new sentence, Van Dyke will probably serve for only about three years, with a credit for good behavior.
