Milwaukee suspect shoots longtime friend dead mistaking him for thief

Milwaukee police have arrested a man in connection with the deadly shooting at a gas station on Feb. 1.

47-year-old Byron A. Artis admitted the killing of his friend arguing that he was under cocaine influence and that he mistook him for a theft.

According to police, Artis and Ruquinn A. McCullar were high on drugs, The pals have driven Artis's car before stopping for buying cigarettes at a gas station on West Lisbon Avenue.

McCullar who was sitting at the driver's seat got out of the vehicle as Artis remained in the back seat.

When his friend returned and tried to open the car's door, Artis shot him dead mistaking him for a theft.

The suspect said in a criminal complaint: "I guess I'm wanted for a shooting that happened; a friend told me to turn myself in. I think I might need a lawyer."
