The FBI has closed the investigation into the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, without determining the gunman’s motive.
With those revelations, police announced they were closing their 10-month investigation without a definitive answer for why Stephen Paddock, a high-stakes gambler, amassed an arsenal of weapons and carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
"By all accounts, Stephen Paddock was an unremarkable man whose movements leading up to Oct. 1 didn't raise any suspicion."
Paddock opened fire into a crowd of approximately 22,000 concertgoers attending a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip. The incident was the deadliest mass shooting by a lone shooter in United States history, with 58 fatalities and 851 injuries.
The 64-year-old retired postal service worker, accountant, and real estate investor had committed suicide.
Aaron Rouse, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas Office, said that Paddock had acted alone both in planning and carrying out the assault.
He left behind nothing that offered an explanation.
"He acted alone. He committed a heinous act. He died by his own hand," Rouse said. "If he wanted to leave a message, he would have left a message. Bottom line is he didn't want people to know."
