A Florida high school student who has brandished a gun-shaped knife during a fight was arrested Wednesday.

19-year-old student Craig Denton was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property and disruption of a school function.

the incident happened at DeLand High School Wednesday morning when Denton brandished the weapon which looked like a gun inside a black holster at other students around 11:30 a.m., officers said.

Police said the suspect fled when a school resource officer tried to catch him and he later dropped the object which was identified later as a gun-shaped knife.

“No one was injured and the campus is secure. We are proud of our students who correctly responded by immediately alerting officials,” the school’s principal told parents in a voice message.

DeLand High School parent Marie Smith said the school should be doing more when it comes to security.

"That would stop the violence, (students) smoking in the back and skipping school too," Smith said.

Denton was being held on $8,000 bond. He is scheduled to have his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
