A 2-year-old girl was found dead early Monday just outside her New Hampshire home after she managed to get outside and couldn't get back in.
Newport police said they received several emergency calls around 7:10 a.m. from the child's family reporting her as unresponsive and not breathing. The toddler was later pronounced dead by responding officers.
Sofia Van Schoick was found barefoot and wearing only a nightgown at the bottom of stairs outside the home. Preliminary investigation results said that the toddler had left the house on her own since the front door was easy to open, and the family had just moved into the apartment and had not had time to fix deadbolts on the entrance.
