A US Army soldier who escaped army in 2000 was arrested last week in Indiana after living with a fake identity there for nearly two decades.

46-years-old Robert Eugene Bowmen lived 17 years under a fake identity working as a dishwasher at an Italian restaurant in Indiana.

his identity was discovered while police were interviewing him last month about a fight with a co-worker. They eventually found his real name, Robert Eugene Brodbeck, and an 18-year-old warrant for deserting the Army.

he has originally given police a fake name which did not show on the police database, he was forced then to tell his real name.

after police searched his history they came to learn that he is wanted in Texas for dodging police and failing to appear in court and that he deserted the Army in 2000, it added, although details of that alleged action weren't immediately available.

Brodbeck was being held at the Vermillion County Jail on Thursday while waiting to be transferred into the custody of the U.S. Marshall's Service.
