Oakland recorded its lowest number of murders in two decades

Authorities say the town of Oakland, in the San Francisco Bay Area, has recorded the lowest number of murders in nearly two decades, with 68 murders in 2018.

On Thursday, Auckland Mayor Lippi Schaff said major crimes were down 11 percent from the previous year. Thefts at home and car thefts were also few.

The killings in 2018 are the lowest since 1999, when 60 murders took place.

Shave and other leaders attribute the fall of crime to better social relations and a municipal initiative called Operation Ceasefire, which aims to reduce armed violence related to the group and other groups.

The population of Auckland is approximately 400,000.
