On-duty U.S. Marine fatally shot inside barracks in Washington D.C.

Police in Washington, D.C. said that a U.S. Marine has been shot and killed inside of his Barracks in Washington early Tuesday morning.

According to Capt. Colleen McFadden the fatal shooting occurred before dawn on New Year's Day and the victim did not shoot himself, he was on duty at the time of the incident. A barracks statement says the release of the U.S. Marine's name is pending notification of his family.

He was shot around 5 a.m and transported to a hospital when he was prounonced dead later that same day.

Officials claimed that there was no threat to the public and no arrests have been made.

The Marine Barracks was launched in 1801. A Marine survived a self inflicted gunshot injury at the compound in June and another was fatally shot in the head in 2013.
