The former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Tom Frieden, told Axios Health he is forecasting that 20,000 people could die from COVID-19 by the end of July.
His prediction is based on the current number of cases in the US. Frieden said the CDC has been regulated to the backseat during this pandemic.
Dr. Tom Frieden said that the US' response amid the pandemic hasn't been fully public since February, adding that it's very difficult to know how decisions are made, referring to Trump and his administration, along with other state officials and governors.
Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University told Axios, "I think people think we've come out of something," but in reality, she said, "we hit pause, and now we're hitting play, and we don't know what the next song's going to be.”
