California health officials have deemed two churches as “coronavirus hot spots” after holding Mother’s Day services in disregard of social distancing measures ending up with dozens of attendees getting infected.

The Assembly of God Church in Redwood Valley is accused of being the source of a third of Mendocino County confirmed cases after holding a service on Mother’s Day. Two attendees who lived outside the county were also infected.

The second illness hot spot is the Palermo Bible Family Church in Butte County that welcomed 160 patrons; one of them had the deadly bug. Days later, a sudden spike in the county’s cases had been recorded: “At this time, organizations that hold in-person services or gatherings are putting the health and safety of their congregations at great risk,” officials said.
