MTA subway operator hailed hero after dying while saving passengers’ lives from fire that ravaged train

A New York City train operator is being hailed as a hero after he sacrificed his life to save passengers amid a suspicious fire that erupted early Friday morning.

36-year-old Garrett Goble managed to stop after learning that flames were ravaging the car behind his: “As it reached 110th Street here, an employee that was on the train reported to the motorman that there were heavy smoke and fire coming from the second car,” Police Chief Brian McGee said. “The train stopped and many people got off because there was a large, large fire on that train.”

The operator was found unconscious on the tracks. He died shortly afterward: “The train conductor is a real hero. Safely evacuating people from the burning train, he did an incredible job and deserves our honor and praise.”
