New Mexico parents were charged with child abuse after they failed to provide their baby boy with medication and missed his appointments following his 2018 liver transplant surgery.

The arrest of Jason Witterman and his wife Kayla took place at his property at San Juana County on July 8.

The couple has not given the 1-year-old medication and declined to take him to follow-up appointment after the transplant surgery which was considered vital, according to doctors so that the baby's body will accept the foreign organ.

Maria Sanders, an educator with New Mexico Donor Services insisted that "they need to continue taking anti-rejection medication, and the anti-medications keeps your body, the person who receives the transplant, from rejecting that organ that was transplanted to them."
