A Florida father was arrested over the weekend after his 8-year-old son found a loaded gun and shot at two toddlers killing one of them.
Roderick Dwayne Randall was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, culpable negligence, and failure to safely store a firearm.
The victims were the daughters of Randall’s girlfriend and were aged one and two-year-old. They were staying with their mom and the boy at a motel when the incident occurred Saturday.
“Roderick leaves the hotel but leaves his firearm in a closet n apparently what he thought was a safe holster,” Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said.
“He [the boy] pulls the gun from the holster, starts playing with it, and fires a round into the 1-year-old toddler, ultimately killing the 1-year-old.”
The father reportedly returned to the room to remove the weapon and a bag of drugs.
“This is not how we treat our children. Our hearts go out to the rest of the families. This is ridiculous,” Simmons said.
