The police-involved shooting of a Black man had once again sparked protests, this time in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where an off-duty officer gunned down a 37-year-old man claiming he jumped on to his car.
Fayetteville Police Officer Jeffery Hash had since been placed on leave with authorities revealing that the preliminary investigation showed victim Jason Walker “ran into traffic and jumped on the moving vehicle” before the driver, Officer Hash, shot him dead using a personal firearm.
But witness Elizabeth Ricks, a trauma nurse who tried to help Walker, challenged the department’s story.
“I did not see anyone in distress. The man was just walking home,” she said.
“It breaks my heart he didn’t survive and I’m trying to cope with that as well. I don’t want to take away from Jason or the injustice and I’m not going to be silent.”
